New Year’s Day is the start of my 1000 cranes project.
The paper was donated by my husband, and I started with a book of instructions. I felt ready. Still, the folding was more challenging than I expected. I had the book, but I also needed to look online for help. This site was especially useful: https://origami.me/crane/
The first crane was folded in bed, still a little tired from the New Year’s Eve celebration (Special thanks to the neighbors who started a karaoke party at 1 am) What I learned right away is that you need a solid surface to get well defined folds. I also noticed that small imperfections early on become amplified as you move forward. A small mistake at the beginning carries all the way to the end. I am not sure yet if that is a good or bad thing. I also do pottery, and lately I have been experimenting with wabi sabi inspired pieces, where imperfection and flawed beauty are appreciated.
The second and third cranes were made at the dining table. They were not much easier than the first. I assumed I knew what I was doing, but I got stuck on one step and had to retrace my folds several times before figuring it out. I almost took a break, but eventually I finished them. By the third crane, things started to flow more easily. I began to appreciate the sequence of the folds and how new shapes slowly emerge from the paper.
The fourth crane was the first one I made without using the book or the website. I was sitting on the couch, so the folds were not as neat, but it felt like progress.
A last minute executive decision was to give each crane a name. The first four are called Beginning, Hope, Resolution, and Preparation, to mark the start of the New Year 2026 and preparation for a long work I will be starting soon.

El Día de Año Nuevo marca el inicio de mi proyecto de las 1000 grullas.
El papel fue un regalo de mi marido y comencé con un libro de instrucciones. Me sentía preparada. Aun así, el plegado fue más desafiante de lo que esperaba. Tenía el libro, pero también necesité buscar ayuda en línea. Este sitio fue especialmente útil:https://origami.me/crane/
La primera grulla la hice en la cama, todavía un poco cansada por la celebración de Año Nuevo (Agradecimientos especiales a los vecinos que empezaron un karaoke a la 1 de la mañana). Lo primero que aprendí es que se necesita una superficie firme para que los pliegues queden bien definidos. También noté que pequeñas imperfecciones al comienzo se amplifican a medida que avanzas. Un pequeño error al comienzo se arrastra hasta el final. Todavía no sé si eso es algo bueno o malo. Otro de mis hobbies es la cerámica, y últimamente he estado experimentando con piezas inspiradas en el wabi sabi, donde la imperfección y la belleza imperfecta son valoradas.
La segunda y la tercera grulla las hice en la mesa del comedor de mis papas. No fueron mucho más fáciles que la primera. Pensé que ya sabía lo que estaba haciendo, pero me quedé atascada en un paso y tuve que retroceder varias veces hasta entenderlo. Estuve a punto de tomar un descanso, pero finalmente las terminé. Para la tercera grulla, el proceso empezó a fluir un poco más y comencé a apreciar la secuencia de los pliegues y cómo el papel va creando nuevas formas poco a poco.
La cuarta grulla fue la primera que hice sin usar el libro ni el sitio web. Estaba sentada en el sillón, así que los pliegues no quedaron tan bien, pero lo sinti como un avance.
Una decisión ejecutiva de último minuto fue darle un nombre a cada grulla. Las primeras cuatro se llaman Comienzo, Esperanza, Resolución y Preparación, para marcar el inicio del Año Nuevo 2026 y en preparacion por un viaje largo por trabajo que comienzo en unos dias.
