January 2, #5 Possibility
Today I used a backup set of paper. It has patterns on both sides and a slightly different texture. I was able to finish the crane without looking at the instructions, which felt like a small milestone. I think learning the mechanism of the folds, without thinking too much about each step, will help me slowly improve the precision.
The neck and the beak, and especially the tail, are still the hardest parts for me. It feels like all the imperfections of the folding end up there. That is something I want to start paying closer attention to in the next cranes.
For now, I decided to stick with single color paper. With the busy patterns, the shape of the crane gets a bit lost, and I want to focus on understanding the form before adding more visual complexity.
2 de Enero, # 5 Posibilidad
Hoy usé un set de papel de respaldo. Tiene patrones por ambos lados y una textura un poco diferente. Pude terminar la grulla sin mirar las instrucciones, lo que se sintió como un pequeño hito. Creo que aprender el mecanismo de los pliegues, sin pensar demasiado en cada paso, me ayudará poco a poco a mejorar la precisión.
El cuello y el pico, y sobre todo la cola, siguen siendo las partes más difíciles para mí. Siento que ahí se concentran todas las imperfecciones del plegado. Es algo a lo que quiero empezar a poner más atención en las próximas grullas.
Por ahora decidí quedarme con papel de un solo color. Con los patrones más cargados, la forma de la grulla se pierde un poco, y quiero concentrarme primero en entender bien la figura antes de agregar complejidad visual.
January 3, #6 Anticipation
Today’s crane was folded while waiting to leave for the first leg of a long, multi step trip. I am leaving my parents’ house in Limache and traveling overnight to Valdivia, where I will meet colleagues. From there, we will pack a sailboat and head out for about twenty days of sampling microplastic contamination along the coast of Chile.
There are a lot of mixed emotions today. What I am leaving behind, where I am going, and the anticipation of a long trip ahead are all present at the same time.
I am still working on the folding. I did not make this one at a table, and I can tell. I think I need to try that again. The head came out reasonably well, but the tail still has issues with the fold. Clearly, that is something I am carrying with me into the next crane.

La grulla de hoy la hice mientras esperaba salir para la primera etapa de un viaje largo, de varios tramos. Hoy dejo la casa de mis padres en Limache y viajo durante la noche a Valdivia, donde me reuniré con colegas. Desde ahí, vamos a preparar un velero para comenzar cerca de veinte días de muestreo de contaminación por microplásticos a lo largo de la costa de Chile.
Hay muchas emociones mezcladas hoy. Lo que dejo atrás, hacia dónde voy y la anticipación del viaje largo que viene están todas presentes al mismo tiempo.
Sigo trabajando en el plegado. Esta grulla no la hice sobre una mesa, y se nota. Creo que voy a tener que volver a eso. La cabeza quedó relativamente bien, pero la cola volvió a tener problemas con el pliegue. Claramente es algo que me voy llevando a la siguiente grulla.
